Johnsburg is a village in McHenry County, Illinois. The 2020 census recorded a population of 6,355 across 7.85 square miles. German immigrants fleeing religious persecution established the area in 1841 and built their first church in 1842 — a log cabin that also served as a school and meeting hall. The present St. John the Baptist church was dedicated in 1902.
The modern village's incorporation history is unusual: when unincorporated residents feared annexation by neighboring towns, the adjacent incorporated village of Sunnyside agreed to annex the area on the condition of renaming itself. After the annexation completed in 1992, the Sunnyside Village Board legally renamed the municipality to Johnsburg. Musician Tom Waits wrote a song titled 'Johnsburg, Illinois' in 1982, dedicating it to his wife, who grew up in the village.
