Elkhorn is a city in Walworth County, Wisconsin, serving as the county seat. It is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Milwaukee. The city was named in 1836 when Colonel Samuel Phoenix spotted a rack of elk antlers in a tree and proclaimed the area 'Elk Horn.' Elkhorn was incorporated as a village in 1857 and elevated to city status in 1897.
Since 1851, Elkhorn has hosted the Walworth County Fair, which is the largest county fair in Wisconsin. The city is also locally known as the 'Christmas Card Town' for its tradition of elaborate holiday decorations, celebrated annually through oil paintings by local artist Jan Castle Reed.
