Rolling Meadows is a city in Cook County, Illinois, situated approximately 24 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The city was incorporated in 1955. Settlement of the area began in 1836 when Orrin Ford became the first landowner, staking a claim of 160 acres. Modern suburban development emerged in the 1950s through developer Kimball Hill's initiative — by 1955, 700 houses had been sold, mostly to blue-collar workers.
Northrop Defense Systems is the city's largest employer. Other major employers include Arthur J. Gallagher and Verizon Wireless.
