Skokie is a village in Cook County, Illinois, located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Chicago. The 2020 census recorded a population of 67,824. The name derives from a Potawatomi word meaning 'marsh.' Skokie was originally incorporated as Niles Centre in 1888 and renamed Skokie in 1940 following a referendum.
During the 1950s through 1970s, an estimated 8,000 Holocaust survivors settled in Skokie. The village was the subject of two United States Supreme Court cases: National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie (1977), concerning First Amendment protections, and Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County v. Army Corps of Engineers (2001).
