Winnetka is a village in Cook County, Illinois, situated along Lake Michigan with Glencoe to the north and Kenilworth to the south. The community was first settled in 1836 and incorporated in 1869; the village name derives from the Potawatomi language and is believed to mean 'beautiful place.' Winnetka attracted prominent architects of the early 20th century including George Washington Maher, Walter Burley Griffin, John S. Van Bergen, Robert Seyfarth, Howard Van Doren Shaw, and David Adler.
Notable Winnetka structures include the Crow Island School — designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen with Perkins, Wheeler & Will and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1990 — and the Schmidt-Burnham Log House, the village's oldest surviving structure. The Winnetka Park District, established in 1904, is the fourth-oldest park district in Illinois and operates 27 parks, five beaches, and recreational facilities throughout the village.
