Libertyville is a village in Lake County, Illinois, located approximately 40 miles north of Chicago. Settlement began in 1835 when George Vardin became the first recorded non-indigenous resident. The village was officially incorporated in 1882, following the arrival of a Milwaukee Road train spur in 1881. After a major fire destroyed the downtown in 1895, the village board mandated that reconstruction use brick.
Notable Libertyville landmarks include the Cook Mansion, built in 1879 and now operating as a museum, and St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Monastery, which housed the remains of Peter II of Yugoslavia from 1970 until 2013.
