Lindenhurst is a village in Lake County, Illinois, situated within Lake Villa Township. The village was officially incorporated on January 16, 1957, after incorporation papers were filed in November 1956. The village grew from the Ernst E. Lehmann farm, acquired by developer Morton Engle in the early 1950s. The name derives from two rows of linden trees that outlined the original farmhouse.
The first village president was Lee R. Lewis, and early meetings were held on Saturdays to accommodate commuting board members. Initial homes were priced from $12,000 to $15,000, roof extra. Morton Engle constructed approximately 2,000 homes before selling remaining acreage to larger corporations. By 1961, approximately 200 houses per year were being built.
