Mundelein is a village in Lake County, Illinois, located approximately 33 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The village was first settled by Europeans in 1835 and incorporated on February 1, 1909. The community changed names four times before adopting Mundelein in 1925 in honor of Cardinal George Mundelein. Earlier names included Mechanics Grove, Holcomb, Rockefeller, and Area.
Diamond Lake — a 153-acre glacial lake — sits within the village and is used for fishing, swimming, and boating. The University of Saint Mary of the Lake, a Catholic seminary, opened in 1921 and hosted the closing events of the 28th International Eucharistic Congress on June 24, 1926, drawing approximately half a million people.
