Riverwoods is a village in Lake County, Illinois, established in 1959 when local residents incorporated the community to halt development and protect its woodlands. The village was founded by steel magnate Jay Peterson on the Des Plaines River. Riverwoods is bordered by Lincolnshire, Bannockburn, Buffalo Grove, and Deerfield.
The Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area, encompassing 565 acres, is central to the community. Orphans of the Storm, an animal shelter established in 1928 by dancer Irene Castle, operates within the village. Riverwoods contains over 40 midcentury homes designed by architect Edward Humrich.
