Zion is a city in Lake County, Illinois, located approximately 40 miles north of Chicago. The city was founded in 1900 by John Alexander Dowie, a Scottish-Australian evangelical minister who named it after Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Dowie initially owned all of the land and most businesses in the city, and he established the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church, the only church in town. The original structure burned down in 1937.
In 1990, a federal court ruled that the city could no longer use religious symbols — crown, scepter, dove, and cross — on its seal, though 'In God We Trust' remained permissible. Illinois Beach State Park's South Beach is the closest state park area to the city. Zion is served by Metra's Union Pacific North Line.
